Boris Johnson's Brexit Divide-and-Rule Plan Is Failing
Instead of prodding Germany into a Brexit deal against French wishes, the U.K. prime minister is binding them closer together.

EU makes fishing and transport no-deal offers in return for 'level playing field'
Bloc would allow access to UK hauliers and airlines for six months if overall deal not reached
The EU has said that in the event of a no-deal Brexit, British airlines could be banned from landing in European destinations and public disorder could break out as haulage routes break down.
But in a flurry of announcements, the European commission said it would legislate to temporarily allow airlines from the UK to operate flights across its territory and it would keep roads open to British hauliers for six months, if the government maintained regulations equivalent to EU law.
The EU will also offer British fishermen access to its seas and open negotiations over quotas, if the UK government reciprocates.
The European commission said the offers were for a limited period and it was only willing to act to avoid the worst disruption, including the risk of outbreaks of violence. ...

‘You were a significant EU member when all this began in 2016,
but that significance - in terms of economic strength, your City, key industries, diplomatic clout, relationship with the US - has since been degraded.
We can now afford to lose you.’

Brexit: UK-EU talks continue as Navy boats put on standby
Trade talks between the UK and European Union are continuing in Brussels with one day to go until a deadline imposed by the two sides.
The leaders of both parties have warned they are unlikely to reach a post-Brexit trade deal by Sunday.
On Friday, Boris Johnson chaired a "stock-take" on the UK's preparedness for a no-deal scenario.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said four Royal Navy patrol boats are ready to protect UK fishing waters.

Brexit: No-deal Navy threat 'irresponsible', says Tobias Ellwood
Deploying Royal Navy gunboats to protect UK fishing waters under a no-deal Brexit would be "undignified", a former Conservative minister has said.
Tory MP Tobias Ellwood described the threat as "irresponsible" after the Ministry of Defence said four ships were ready for "robust enforcement" when the transition period ends.
Mr Ellwood, who chairs the Commons Defence Committee, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that headlines highlighting the threat to deploy the Navy risked distracting from the ongoing talks and were "absolutely irresponsible".
"This isn't Elizabethan times anymore, this is global Britain - we need to be raising the bar much higher than this," he said. ...
Former Tory party chairman Lord Patten accused Prime Minister Boris Johnson of being on a "runaway train of English exceptionalism".
Humza Yousaf, the Scottish government justice minister, told the BBC: "This UK government gunboat diplomacy is not welcome in Scottish waters.
"We will protect our fisheries where necessary. Police Scotland and Marine Scotland have primacy to do that. But we won't do that by threatening our allies, our Nato allies in fact, by threatening to sink their vessels." ...

If Mr Johnson fails to reach an acceptable trade agreement with the EU the Prime Minister will also have failed the people of the United Kingdom.
As a lifelong member of the Conservative Party, I believe that Mr Johnson's position as Prime Minister would be untenable. 1/2
As an honourable man, he would have to make way for somebody more able to pick up the pieces,
to re-unite the whole Country and to show the leadership that Great Britain and Northern Ireland deserves. 2/2

Not a chance. Johnson is not an “honourable man”. Never has been, never will be.
I’m amazed Sir Roger that you have any faith in a man that has lied throughout his life and now presides over one of the most corrupt Tory govts ever.

BREXIT UPDATE FROM DELUSIONAL BRITAIN
Things here in the United Kingdom are progressing from strength to strength of course. We’ve successfully taken back control, blue passports are now standard issue, and we’re tooling up for a war with the French over fish.
This thread is several days old now, but captures the lunacy of what we’re experiencing. An excerpt:

It seems likely that Johnson is wary of the ERG on his right flank, so any agreement that accepts any regulation or limitation on British freedom to manoever will be rejected. In other words, any sort of trading relationship whatsoever beyond that which is conducted under WTO rules with a no-deal Brexit.
Fortunately, we’ve been relentlessly informed for over four years that they need us more than we need them, so I’m confident this will all work out just brilliantly in the end.

At least you're an island. If you were part of the Continent, Johnson would be talking about building a wall and that the French would pay for it.

The contrast between the high drama in the U.K. and the no-fucks-to-give EU has gotten pretty entertaining.

"You could kill yourself."
"That's the whole idea!"
"Well, could you get a move on? I'm on me lunch break."

Scottish ministers clash on impact of no-deal Brexit tariffs
Scottish ministers have clashed on the impact of tariffs on goods introduced in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
It comes after the UK government's Scotland Office minister David Duguid said tariffs would "not necessarily be the end of the world".
However, the Scottish government's Europe Secretary Mike Russell described such a scenario as a "disaster". ...

My understanding is that the referendum was not binding, so they could have halted Brexit anytime they wanted.
The referendum wasn't binding in the sense that souvereignty lies in Westminster, but not respecting the outcome of the referendum would mean a greater damage to democracy than non accepting the presidency of Joe Biden.
