Your guide to President Joe Biden's brand spanking new Oval Office! César Chávez & Rosa Parks!
After a thorough cleaning, President Biden has reclaimed the Oval, and made it his own.

Busts of César Chávez, Rosa Parks, Abe Lincoln, Harry Truman, Dr. Martin Luther King, and Bobby Kennedy have been added. Ben Franklin replaces Andrew Jackson. Added a Moon Rock, and removed the “Diet Coke button.”

Above the fireplace hangs a large portrait of Franklin D Roosevelt, the president who led the country through the Great Depression and World War Two.
The portrait of another former president, Thomas Jefferson, has been paired with a man he frequently disagreed with, his former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton as "hallmarks of how differences of opinion, expressed within the guardrails of the Republic, are essential to democracy", the Post quotes Biden's office as saying.
Portraits of two other celebrated former presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, have also been paired.

Also gone is the tacky gold carpet replaced, by a deep blue carpet.

'A Hugely Consequential First Move': Biden Offers to Extend Nuclear START Treaty With Russia
"After four years of efforts to kill arms control and chase the false security of nuclear dominance, the U.S. is coming back to its senses," said one peace activist. "Unless you're a defense contractor, this is good news for everyone."

In a move applauded by anti-war activists, U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday reportedly offered Russian President Vladimir Putin a five-year extension of the New START treaty just days before the pact—the only remaining nuclear arms control agreement regulating the two largest nuclear arsenals in the world—is set to expire.

Ach ja, der "Rassismus". Quod erat expectandum. 😂

Biden Voters Are More Likely Than Trump Voters To Favor Bipartisan Efforts
Most backers of the new president expect him to make an effort at bipartisanship, a new survey finds.

Half of the voters who supported President Joe Biden in last year’s election think he should try to compromise with Republicans in Washington, a new HuffPost/YouGov survey finds.

Fifty percent of Biden voters say the president should compromise some of his positions in order to work with the GOP, the poll finds, with 30% saying he should stick to his positions even if it means not coming to an agreement. The rest aren’t sure.

By contrast, a 57% majority of voters who backed former President Donald Trump say that Republicans in Washington should stick to their positions, with just 28% favoring compromise.

They were on the attack from the very first day.

President Joe Biden was barely in office for a day when right-wing media began its attack.

Led by Fox News, conservative commentators and talk-show hosts blasted him for everything from cycling on a Peloton exercise bike to being sworn in about 10 minutes early during the inauguration ceremony.

Hail to the Thief
Democrats celebrate a “victory for democracy” with barbed wire, soldiers, and political terror.

No inauguration has been this empty in a century of American history. And at no inauguration have the spectators been outnumbered by a raw display of armed force. American presidents have been inaugurated in wartime and during actual national emergencies with a better turnout. ...

... Filling D.C. with soldiers meant that no one was going to measure Biden’s crowds. The only crowds were heavily armed and had been ordered to come. The complete lack of enthusiasm for the new one-party state that was getting its Mussolini on was the dog that didn’t bark. ...

... The election challenges have been used as the pretext for a military occupation of Washington D.C. But the cloud of a disputed election, like the winter clouds overhead, still hung over the inauguration.
There were no crowds, just soldiers. After the military and police contingent, the second largest group there for the inauguration weren’t Biden’s civilian supporters, but his propagandists. With few people, the media had to work twice as hard to manufacture the illusion that this was a popular leader taking office instead of a usurper imposed by Amazon, Google, Facebook, and the rest of the political, cultural, and economic oligarchy which owns the media on America. ...

Hannity Gets Blunt Lesson About Time Following ‘Biden’s Disastrous First Week’ Claim
The Fox News personality slammed Joe Biden’s first week in office before the new president had even completed his first full day.

Sean Hannity’s (premature) review of President Joe Biden’s first week is in.
And it’s a doozy — although unsurprising, given the Fox News host’s servile stumping for former President Donald Trump.

On Thursday night, a caption on Hannity’s show declared Biden’s first week as president “disastrous.” But the review came before Biden had even completed his first full day as president.

The GOP Hit Rock Bottom. Can Conservatives Recover?
By Garry Kasparov
If reasonable Republicans want to hold off the far left, they will have to stop the rise of the far right.

We have a new year and a new administration, but America’s crisis hasn’t yet passed. The dangerous forces unleashed over the past five years are still dominant in one major party and are increasingly potent in the other. Reining these dark elements in will take courage and honesty, two characteristics that have been in short supply in Washington. If we fail, the radicals will succeed in using fear and violence to empower each other, crushing the moderates between them.

... If a reckoning is postponed, American conservatism will continue to regress. To many, the total disintegration of the Republican Party may sound like good news, but they’re wrong. A bloody victory is unlikely to help. If the left refuses to work with moderate conservatives, those remaining moderates will soon be replaced by radicals with whom there can be no compromise.

Another renowned American quality, blunt honesty, has been replaced by brash dishonesty. The consensus that most Americans ultimately want the same things—prosperity, freedom, justice—has been broken. The opposition is now routinely treated not as a political rival, but as an enemy of the state. Social media is pushing aside traditional media. The threat of political violence may become normal. The barbarians have overrun both the gatekeepers and the gates. ...

... These trends have been personified by Donald Trump. This is the first hard truth conservatives must accept if they wish to come in from the cold and again shape the future of the U.S. and the world. The right must disavow its extremists or be destroyed by them. Republicans—or preferably, in my view, members of a new and truly conservative party—must tame their violent, conspiracy-loving fringe. Republicans who impeached Trump are already on the chopping block
Candidates, donors and local party officials are organizing against the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump.

Former President Donald Trump’s supporters are mobilizing to exact revenge on the 10 House Republicans who supported impeachment last week, thrusting the GOP into a civil war just as party leaders are trying to move on from the Trump era.
Pro-Trump Republicans are racing to launch primary challenges. The former president’s donors are cutting off the Republican incumbents. And Trump’s political lieutenants are plotting how to unseat them.

Kasparov:
... If Trumpists continue to dominate the Republican Party, the Biden administration won’t be able to withstand the pressure from progressives to fight fire with fire.

One clear-eyed look at the 2020 election results should convince conservatives that such a war would be destructive and unwinnable. Mr. Trump did better than the polls predicted, mostly because some Democrats pushed messages like “defund the police” to the fore. That the president lost anyway is a warning to anyone hoping to emulate his populist demagoguery. ...
