Trump at Georgia rally says he hopes Pence 'comes through for us'
President Trump on Monday said he hoped Vice President Pence “comes through for us” as he discussed efforts to overturn the presidential election results, hinting at Pence’s role overseeing the certification of the Electoral College vote count on Wednesday.

President Trump on Monday said he hoped Vice President Pence “comes through for us” as he discussed efforts to overturn the presidential election results, hinting at Pence’s role overseeing the certification of the Electoral College vote count on Wednesday.

“I hope that Mike Pence comes through for us, I have to tell you. I hope that our great vice president, our great vice president comes through for us. He’s a great guy,” Trump told a crowd of supporters at a rally in Dalton, Ga.

“Of course, if he doesn’t come through, I won’t like him quite as much,” Trump continued. “Nah, Mike is a great guy. He’s a wonderful man and a smart man and a man that I like a lot.”

Sturgeon says Trump coming to play golf in Scotland is ‘not essential travel’
Trump not allowed into Scotland to escape Biden inauguration, Sturgeon warns
US president reportedly planning to visit his Turnberry golf resort to avoid opponent being sworn into office

Donald Trump will not be allowed to visit Scotland to play golf during Joe Biden's inauguration, Nicola Sturgeon has said.

The US president, who was overwhelmingly defeated in November's election, is reportedly considering travelling to his Turnberry golf resort to avoid Mr Biden being sworn into office.

But Scotland's first minister stressed it is illegal to travel in or out of the country without a valid reason and said: "Coming to play golf is not what I would consider to be an essential purpose."
"We are not allowing people to come in to Scotland without an essential purpose right now and that would apply to him, just as it applies to anybody else.

Steve Schmidt@SteveSchmidtSES
The die is cast for the Republican Party. It will be destroyed on January 6th in much the same way the Whig party was destroyed by the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854.
The act unraveled the Missouri compromise and allowed for the westward expansion of slavery.
The party could not survive its factionalism. There could be no more accommodation, compromise and partnership between pro-slavery and anti-slavery Whigs.
A new political party was born, the Republican Party.

That party will divide into irreconcilable factions on January 6th. The 6th will commence a political civil war inside the GOP.
The autocratic side will roll over the pro-democracy remnant of the GOP like the Wehrmacht did the Belgian Army in 1940.

The ‘22 GOP primary season will be a blood letting. The 6th will be a loyalty test. The purge will follow.
Does anybody doubt the outcome of the @IvankaTrump vs. @marcorubio primary in Florida? Anyone willing to make a bet on @robportman?

It turns out JFK was right. The problem of trying to ride the tiger is the likelihood of winding up inside the tiger.
The poisonous Fruit from four years of collaboration and complicity with Trumps insanity, illiberalism and incompetence are ready for harvest.
It will kill the GOP because it’s Pro Democracy faction and Autocratic factions can no more exist together then could the Whig Party hold together

The abolitionist with the Slave master. It won’t happen over night but the destination is clear. The Conservative party in America is dead.
It may continue to bear the name “Republican” but it will be no such thing.

Fascism has indeed come to America and as was once predicted "It is wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross".
This movement must be defeated. It cannot be appeased, accommodated or negotiated with. It must be recognized for what it is and we must all recognize the new age of American politics it has wrought. It has reset the debate Entirely.

There are only two sides in American politics now. There is the American side and the Autocratic side.
May God help us all if we falter, flag or fail in defense of American democracy.

Trump administration seeks to undo decades-long rules on discrimination
The Trump administration is pushing in its final days to undo decades-long protections against discrimination, a last-ditch effort to accomplish a longtime goal of conservative legal activists.

The Justice Department is seeking to change interpretation of Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which bars discrimination on the basis of race, color or national origin by recipients of federal funding. Under these rules, actions are considered discriminatory if they have a discriminatory effect, what’s known as a “disparate impact,” on protected groups. Under the new version, only intentional discrimination would be prohibited.

The Trump administration has been considering this change for more than two years but waited until its final weeks to try to put it into effect. A notice about the change was filed for regulatory review at the White House last month and a copy of the proposal was shared with The Washington Post.

The Corporations Funding the End of Democracy
The GOP’s efforts to undermine our elections did not begin this week, and they were heavily subsidized by some of America’s best-known firms.

... A perennial favorite is the essay or column urging the Republican Party to come to reason. Trump may be on his way out, but this genre will be with us probably forever—animated, as it is, by a seemingly boundless reserve of dishonesty. The Republican Party is wholly beyond redemption, and writers know it even if they aren’t willing to admit it to their readers or themselves. One can’t argue otherwise without employing distortions of reality that, while not as egregious as Trump’s, certainly mirror them. ...

... That said, turning those preferences into actual political power does take money. And the Republican Party gets its money not only from the individual villains who’ve soaked up the most progressive outrage and attention—the Kochs, the Mercers, Sheldon Adelson, and all the rest—but from a number of companies familiar to the American public.

As David Daley noted in his November feature for this magazine on Republican minority rule, those companies have made direct financial contributions to the party’s assault on the democratic process. In 2010, the Republican State Leadership Committee, or RSLC, was able to fund its Redistricting Majority Project, or REDMAP, with $30 million in donations taken in part from corporations like Wal-Mart, AT&T, and Pfizer.
The victories the party won in statehouses around the country enabled not only post-census racial gerrymandering but also the passage of voter ID laws and other suppression measures that targeted African Americans with “surgical precision” in North Carolina and other states—all advanced by Republican state legislators propagating myths about voter fraud. All we’ve been put through since November and all we’ve witnessed in Congress this week have been the fruits of that project.
A decision was made 10 or 11 years ago that the future of the Republican Party would rest upon delegitimizing or undermining the votes of its opponents. A plan was made; corporations financed it. ...

... But insofar as the Republican Party is a primary obstacle to policies that would begin wresting their power away, any small thing that might weaken it is well worth a try. And this certainly beats nothing.

Jeff Flake to Republicans: 'There is power in standing up to the rank corruptions of a demagogue'
Former GOP Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) this week urged Republicans in Congress to stand against President Trump when a joint session meets Wednesday afternoon to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.
"Unfortunately, President Trump refuses to accept the reality of his substantial loss, and so becomes determined to create an alternate reality in which he won," Flake wrote this week in an op-ed published in the New York Times. "As he crosses that rubicon, Mr. Trump has taken many in my party with him, all of whom seem to have learned the wrong lessons from this anomalous presidency."

GOP Rep. Warns Of ‘Full-Scale Hot Conflict’ If Republicans Lose Senate
Texas Republican Chip Roy scaremongered about Georgia’s runoff Senate elections on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show.

In an appearance on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show, Roy warned what he believed will happen if Democrats flip the Senate by winning Tuesday’s runoff elections in Georgia.
“What happens tomorrow in Georgia, if we have a Democratically controlled Senate, I mean, we’re now basically at full-scale hot conflict in this country, whereas right now we’re in a cold civil war,” Roy told Carlson.

Is America Turning Into A 'Failed State’?
Karen Greenberg

... All in all, we find ourselves in a daunting new world, but don't just blame it on the pandemic. This country was living in a state of denial before Covid-19 hit. The truth is that Americans have been in trouble for a surprisingly long time. The pandemic might have swept away that sense of denial and left us facing a new American reality, as that virus exposed previously ignored vulnerabilities for all to see.

So, expect one thing: that the indicators of America's decline will far surpass the problems that can be solved by addressing the pandemic's spread. When Covid-19 is brought under some control, the larger social system may unfortunately remain in tatters, in need of life support, posing new challenges for the country as a whole.

Several observers, witnessing such potentially long-lasting changes to the fabric of American life, have described the United States as resembling a failed state in its reaction to the pandemic. They point not just to the effects of staggering levels of inequality (on the rise for decades) or to a long-term unwillingness to invest in the kind of infrastructure that could keep what's still the wealthiest country on our planet strong, but to entrenched poverty and the fracturing of work life. Long before the pandemic hit, the Trump administration reflected this downhill slope. ...

The Capitol siege was the biggest media spectacle of the Trump era
The storm on the Capitol was the culmination of a presidency defined by media manipulation and networked conspiracism

Trump leaves the news media scrambling to make sense of the post-Trump world, social media platforms reeling to catch up to the new uses and abuses of their technologies, the GOP grasping to keep hold of the Maga patriots who have cleaved from the party, and the nation wondering what the Maga mob will do next.

“The storm” on the Capitol is the result of a new kind of networked conspiracy – a potent brew of disinformation and rumor enabled by platforms, emboldened by politicians and influencers, and defined by a total lack of trust in the news.
