It’s Time for the Elites to Rise Up Against the Ignorant Masses

President Trump throws wrench into COVID-19 relief by saying he won't sign bill
The president says he will only sign it if Americans receive $2,000 payments.
President Donald Trump is giving both Democrats and Republicans a headache on Tuesday after the shocking announcement on Twitter that he will not sign the COVID-19 relief bill negotiated in the Senate and House for months. He had been expected to sign the bipartisan deal this week.
The president asks that the bill be reworked in order to give each American a $2,000 stimulus check instead of the $600 that was negotiated. Democrats had called for more money, but Republicans pushed back on the higher amount.

Democrats dare GOP to block $2,000 stimulus checks in Christmas Eve vote
Speaker Nancy Pelosi says it’s up to the House and Senate GOP to accept Trump’s request to add $2,000 stimulus checks to a colossal spending package he’s threatening to veto.
The California Democrat informed fellow party lawmakers in a memo Wednesday morning she planned to bring up a bill on Christmas Eve that would add the checks to the massive measure, which now provides checks for $600 to individuals and $1,200 to couples.
House lawmakers left town Monday night, which means the extra funding could only pass by unanimous consent and not a roll call vote. Any member can block such a bill if they show up in the chamber to object. Pelosi said it would be up to Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican, to sanction the measure to ensure GOP lawmakers allow it to pass.
“If the President truly wants to join us in $2,000 payments, he should call upon Leader McCarthy to agree to our Unanimous Consent request,” Pelosi wrote. “We are scheduled to go in for a pro forma session tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. We are awaiting word from Leader Hoyer as to whether Leader McCarthy will agree to or reject our Unanimous Consent request.”
The Washington Examiner has requested a comment from McCarthy.
Across the Capitol, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, said he, too, agreed with Pelosi’s move to add the $2,000 checks. ...

Trump administration considering immunity for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman: report
he U.S. State Department is reportedly considering immunity for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in a lawsuit accusing him of attempting to have a former Saudi intelligence official assassinated.
Saad Aljabri, a longtime aide to former Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, went public with his claims in August. His federal lawsuit alleges the crown prince dispatched a hit squad to Canada, where Aljabri lives in exile, and that border officials prevented them from entering the country.
Aljabri alleges the men were sent to kill him within days of the killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi. ...

House GOP rejects unanimous consent on $2,000 direct payments
An effort by House Democrats on Thursday to pass a bill to provide $2,000 stimulus checks — up from the $600 approved in a sweeping coronavirus relief and omnibus spending package earlier in the week — was rejected.
The Democrats’ push to pass the bill came after President Trump raised objections to the $2.3 trillion must-pass legislation, complaining that the $600 direct payments to Americans included in the bill were too small. He instead called for the amount to be raised to $2,000 — setting the scene for a potential government shutdown.

Trump Completes Russiagate Cover-up by Pardoning Paul Manafort
The official White House statement justifying the pardon of Paul Manafort explains that his prosecution “was premised on the Russian collusion hoax.” But Trump’s pardon — a ploy so well signaled its inevitability was clear even before he stepped into the Oval Office and that he has floated for years to keep Manafort quiet — is the final proof the Russia investigation was not a hoax but a scandal Trump used his powers to thwart.

Trump's mind is elsewhere as unemployment benefits run out for millions of Americans
A day before unemployment benefits for millions of Americans were set to expire, President Donald Trump had a different insult in mind: his former-model wife has yet to appear on the cover of a fashion magazine as first lady.
"Fake news!" he complained on Twitter from Palm Beach, concerned for Melania's social station on Christmas as Americans hunkered at home, enduring a holiday diminished by pandemic, darkened by the prospect of an imminent government shutdown and shaken by an eerie explosion in Nashville that authorities said was intentional.
A day later, as those jobless benefits for gig workers and self-employed Americans were lapsing, Trump was issuing a string of angry messages about his own perceived injustices: the election he falsely claims was stolen from him and the growing roster of people he's upset won't help him reverse it.
That Trump has little penchant for reflecting the struggles and concerns of most Americans is hardly new. But his electoral loss has only seemed to harden the callousness that separates his own experience from the country's, even as he insists the country deserves more. ...

This billionaire warns that America's massive wealth gap could lead to conflict
Ray Dalio, the billionaire founder of the world's largest hedge fund, is deeply worried about a divided and profoundly unequal America as President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take power.
Dalio is warning that leaders must urgently address the toxic brew of worsening inequality, political polarization and mounting debt.
"There will have to be a resolution of the system working for the majority of the people in which there's productivity," Dalio told CNN's Poppy Harlow in an interview airing Tuesday. "And that could be obtained either in a smart, bipartisan way -- or it will come by greater conflict."
The pandemic has laid bare just how unequal our system is. As euphoria on Wall Street catapults stock prices to new heights, Main Street is in crisis.
Nearly 8 million Americans have joined the ranks of the poor since June, according to researchers from the University of Chicago and University of Notre Dame.
Also irre. Klar.

Ein Beispiel für den Schwachsinn des Artikels: "Today, just a few days before Christmas, nearly 300,000 Americans have died of Covid. 64,000 Brits have. Compared to much of the rest of the world, even adjusted for population, these are shocking, horrifying, staggering numbers. If America had acted like South Korea, for example, just 3200 people would have died."

“The difference between patriotism and nationalism is that the patriot is proud of his country for what it does, and the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does; the first attitude creates a feeling of responsibility, but the second a feeling of blind arrogance that leads to war.”

“Nationalism is not to be confused with patriotism. Both words are normally used in so vague a way that any definition is liable to be challenged, but one must draw a distinction between them, since two different and even opposing ideas are involved. By ‘patriotism’ I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force on other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally. Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseparable from the desire for power. The abiding purpose of every nationalist is to secure more power and more prestige, not for himself but for the nation or other unit in which he has chosen to sink his own individuality.”
