Dear Republicans,

Is America great now?
The rest of us are just wondering since it's been 3.5 years and we don't seem so great just now. All those ads Trump is running saying 'this is Joe Biden's America' are actually from Donald Trump's America!

There's 137,000 dead Americans from COVID and for whatever reason, Trump has made wearing a mask a political statement where you all think you're 'owning the libs' by not wearing them. Don't act like it isn't you either, it is you and your flagrant stupidity and hatred for science.

Can you think of any other president who has ignored science entirely who made America great again? Remember any president who ignored actual doctors who worked in infectious diseases for 40 years in lieu of their own debunked hydroxy-is-a-cure bullshit? Because I remember that phrase Make America Great Again when Ronald Reagan was saying it during the HIV holocaust. You all weren't so keen to do anything about that either because it was killing gay men who you all thought god was punishing for their imaginary sins.

Only now because COVID is killing people of color, you don't seem to care about them dying either. What happened to your All Lives Matter mantra? Where are all you "pro-lifers" who never shut up about the 'sanctity of life' but can't be bothered not to kill your fellow Americans by wearing a mask? Because over here to the rest of us, it is simply astonishing that you all are so offended when we call you bigots and racists. It's like you don't even know the basic definition of words anymore.
Is it really perplexing to you now why everyone else not in your cult thinks that you are the party of stupid?

I mean it would all be fine if you just climbed back under your rocks but unfortunately that's not how biology works. You are all incubators for COVID and the people who spread it the most are people with no symptoms. For now, it is a mystery why these super-spreaders do not get sick but they are surely killing others by infecting them because they want to Make America Great Again by not wearing a mask.
At this point, you all are so far down the rabbit hole that you think Russia is our friend while they are paying Afghans to kill our soldiers. This isn't a matter of opinion. This isn't a deep-state conspiracy you idiots, it is a provable and verifiable fact that even Mark Esper admitted to last week during his testimony to congress. So how precisely does it make America great again when Trump is calling this a hoax? You know there are Gold Star Families who got a flag-draped casket because of Vladimir Putin! So tell us all about how Hillary was wrong to call Trump a Russian puppet because to the rest of us who actually love our country and who actually support our troops, he is a Russian stooge.

If you aren't sure that you are in the cult of Trump, just remember that you stood by and said *nothing* as Trump called the murder of our soldiers 'fake news.'

Remember when you all used to be about the rule of law? Well the rest of us do and we all have noticed the din of your silence when Trump pardoned his crony Stone for lying to congress, obstructing justice and intimidating a witness.
I guess you weren't so big on that whole 'law and order' thing as you claimed you were huh?
Just like you aren't so big about supporting our troops who are being killed because Putin put bounties on them huh?
Just like you aren't really pro-life nor do you care about the sanctity of life because you won't be bothered to wear a mask huh?

In the future when you look back at your truly limitless hypocrisy again, we are going to shout you down until you shut up! Because you no longer get to claim that you are a Patriotic god-fearing American again. Your god is Trump and your treason in supporting him is undeniable and I for one swear my holiest of oaths and take the most solemn vow that I will never forget your naked villainy nor forgive your revolting silence and despicable crime against our republic by voting for that debased traitor you put in the White House!
-Thomas Clay Jr

Roger Stone, coronavirus, and the 192 days that may destroy America as we know it
From the Electoral College to structural racism, America is feeling painfully aware of its inherent flaws these days. None looms more ominously now than that awkward moment that is the presidential transition. In the momentous winter of 1860-61, the United States literally split in two during the haze between the failed presidency of Pennsylvania’s James Buchanan and the first-ever Republican administration of Abraham Lincoln that terrified the slave-addled South.

Now consider this scenario: A seemingly unending crisis has ripped millions of jobs from the U.S. economy, with a growing homelessness problem — and a stubborn lame duck president with his head in the sand about the radical government intervention required. Those problems appear to loom in 2020, and they were also all too real in the first two months of 1933. ...

... Although after 42 months of Trump’s outrageous presidency has made it almost impossible to be shocked by any headline, Trump’s dictatorial grant of freedom for Stone — clearly a reward for keeping quiet about what the future president and his close associates really know about Russian election interference in 2016 — was arguably the worst abuse of power yet from a POTUS who’s already been impeached once. The commutation was an assault on the Constitution that even Stone’s political mentor, Richard Nixon, considered too extreme at the depths of Watergate. ...

... Could it be that Trump has moved on from the notion of a second term (for which he can’t even give a clear answer on why he wants one) and is fixated on saving himself and his friends and family from prison under Biden, who has made it clear he will not pull a Gerald Ford and issue Trump a blanket pardon? ...

... I always thought the most telling quote of the entire Trump presidency came out during the 2019 impeachment hearings when the diplomat David Holmes testified that ambassador Gordon Sondland told him that Trump only cares about “big stuff” that affect him and his political fate. That’s very much in line with the president’s niece — Mary Trump, a clinical psychologist who’s known The Donald her entire life — finding he has every trait of narcissistic personality disorder. Only a damaged, narcissistic president could draft Stone’s commutation on the same day that he traveled to the coronavirus “hot spot” of Florida and made scant mention of the pandemic.

Trump is now the worst possible president at the worst possible moment — James Buchanan when it comes to national unity, and Herbert Hoover when it comes to inaction on an American crisis. Trump’s refusal to listen to or now even meet the country’s top scientific experts, his failure to not only encourage masks but to even wear one himself before Saturday’s too-little-too-late performance art, and his focus now on reopening schools as COVID-19 cases continue to hit new highs is Hooverism with a lethal twist. Now economists are urging that we prepare for a long and deep recession. Trump is not preparing, though. There’s no plan for more stimulus or to aid the one-third of Americans who can’t pay their rent or mortgage. ...

... The growing number of 2016 Trump voters abandoning the president, and the tiny cracks of GOP opposition to the Stone commutation on Capitol Hill, could expand quickly. It’s hard to imagine either Senate leaders following the historic example of Barry Goldwater, John Rhodes, and Hugh Scott marching down to the White House in 1974, or what would happen on the other side. But every principled Republican who still exists — as well as newspaper editorial boards and a lot of other folks — should be demanding Trump’s resignation, and his Senate removal if he won’t go. GOP leaders can try to save their country and their party — or they can watch Trump try to save himself and destroy everything.

WASHINGTON — President Obama on Tuesday pardoned James E. Cartwright, a retired Marine Corps general and former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who pleaded guilty to lying to the F.B.I. about his discussions with reporters about Iran’s nuclear program, saving him from a possible prison sentence.
....
He was due to be sentenced this month. His defense team had asked for a year of probation and 600 hours of community service, but prosecutors had asked the judge overseeing his case to send him to prison for two years."

New York should prosecute Roger Stone
To almost no one's surprise, days before Roger Stone's prison sentence was about to begin, President Donald Trump has spared his long-time political crony from the pen — late Friday, Mr. Trump commuted Stone's sentence. It is time for New York prosecutors to answer this latest assault by Trump on the rule of law: They should ready a state prosecution of Stone.

Bringing a new case against Stone is possible thanks to Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York Legislature for Assembly Bill 6653. Signed into law last October, AB6653 enables New York district attorneys to prosecute what effectively amounts to certain friends and family of any president who pardoned them for federal convictions. Among the people who can be prosecuted are associates with information relevant to a civil or criminal investigation of the president.
That would be Roger Stone.

Both of us have been criminal defense lawyers in New York for more than 40 years. It is not our habit to advocate prosecuting anyone. But we are defenders of our Constitution first. It is under assault.

Consider what has happened. A federal jury convicted Stone in November 2019 of witness tampering and lying to Congress in its investigation of Russia's election interference in 2016, including alleged collusion between Moscow and Mr. Trump's 2016 election campaign.
Stone's lies covered up his contacts with Wikileaks, which had dumped into the public domain thousands of documents that Russian intelligence hacked from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta.
More importantly, as the judge sentencing Stone said in February: "He was not prosecuted, as some have complained, for standing up for the president. He was prosecuted for covering up for the president." ...

US presidents have broad powers to pardon and commute sentences. However, here we have federal law enforcement neutralized by a president's commutation rewarding the cover-up to protect Trump. A state prosecution would put on trial a man we know is guilty.
Far outweighing any legal risk of bringing Stone to justice in New York is the national benefit: Standing up for the rule of law, showing that it survives in the offices of state prosecutors, if not in the White House.

The following timeline contains events relevant to whether Roger Stone worked with Russian government agents and intermediaries or supported Russian government efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential elections. As a background matter, it is important to know that the U.S. Intelligence Community’s report concludes with “high confidence” that the Russian intelligence operation used Guccifer 2.0 (a front for a Russian intelligence group) and Wikileaks to release the stolen materials in the US election.

Trump Is Cornered. Here’s Why.
The pandemic. Race relations. Unemployment. And more—including his own unlikable self.

The electoral dynamics have already hardened. Donald Trump will lose if everyone who wants to vote can. His remaining hope is to choose his own electorate.

Amid a deadly and economically ruinous pandemic, he is driving a strategy aimed only at arousing his base—chiefly by inflaming white racial grievances and cultural resentment. He seeks not to heal the wounds exacerbated by George Floyd’s murder, but to exploit them.

Reprising the imaginary “carnage” he promised to end in his hallucinatory inaugural address, he recasts himself as Superman in a cartoon dystopia where “angry mobs are trying to tear down statues of our Founders, deface our most sacred memorials, and unleash a wave of violent crime in our cities.” To do so, he converts predominantly peaceful protests into an epidemic of disorder, as if this were America in 1968. But it is not 1968—or even 2016. ...
