Ken Burns: Coronavirus pandemic is crisis "on the level" of Civil War and Great Depression

The state of play: Filmmaker Ken Burns and historian Geoffrey Ward, who have collaborated since 1984 on documentaries that include "The Civil War" and "The Roosevelts," shared stories about leadership in crisis. Burns called the coronavirus pandemic "as great a crisis as we've had."

More from Burns: "This [pandemic] crisis is on the level of the Second World War, but particularly the Depression and the Civil War. As Lincoln predicted, the danger didn't come from without, but from within, and now that's literally medically, epidemiologically true, but also politically and socially true as well."

"We have the opportunity here to press a kind of reset button about our values."

Burns said that both Lincoln and FDR "made huge and glaring mistakes, but a sign of their leadership was their willingness to accept those mistakes, to acknowledge them publicly, to take the blame, to have the buck stop with them and to move on and try something else."
"The greatest measure of leadership is: Are you part of the solution or are you part of the problem?"

Editorial: If the pandemic-preparedness cupboard was bare, it was Trump's doing

Woe is Donald Trump. The long-suffering, misunderstood president just can’t make the world understand what a raw deal he got. The pandemic was China’s fault. Or was it the World Health Organization’s fault? One thing we know for sure, the lax U.S. response was President Barack Obama’s fault.

“We inherited a broken, terrible system …,” Trump told reporters on April 18. “Our cupboards were bare. We had very little in our stockpile.” That was Trump’s attempt, frequently repeated by the president and recycled in White House presentations, to lay responsibility for the inept pandemic response at Obama’s feet, as if three years in office were insufficient for Trump to repair all the supposed damage his predecessor wrought.

Except it’s a lie of colossal Trumpian proportions.

We’ve taken the time to dissect Centers for Disease Control and Prevention budgets from the year before Obama left office all the way to the present. Trump can lie, but the numbers cannot. Obama left office with an unblemished record of building up the nation’s pandemic preparedness. Trump systematically sought to dismantle it. ...

A world redrawn: US coronavirus response fatally 'chaotic,' says Noam Chomsky
There's no coherent leadership. It's chaotic. The presidency, the White House, is in the hands of a sociopathic megalomaniac who's interested in nothing but his own power, electoral prospects -- doesn't care what happens to the country, the world.

The president himself has said that it's none of his business. He's said that the federal government can't do anything.
Nothing really matters except his personal power and gain. Of course he has to maintain the support of his primary constituency, which is great wealth and corporate power.

There's 90,000 deaths and there will be a lot more.... There's no coordinated plan. ...

Trump calls mask wearing ‘politically correct,’ Biden calls him a ‘fool’
In early April, Trump announced new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that Americans wear face coverings in public to slow the spread of the coronavirus, reversing the administration’s earlier recommendations that masks weren’t necessary. The president was clear, however, that he would not be wearing a mask — even though “it may be good” advice.

The president’s refusal to wear a face mask in public, defying recommendations from public health experts, has become a symbol for his supporters resisting stay-at-home orders amid the coronavirus crisis. To wear one then is seen by some as being anti-Trump.

President Trump dismissed a mask-wearing reporter as being “politically correct” on Tuesday while the presumptive Democratic candidate, Joe Biden, called him a “fool” for mocking their use.

Where U.S. coronavirus cases are on the rise
Twenty U.S. states reported an increase in new cases of COVID-19 for the week ended May 24, up from 13 states in the prior week, as the death toll from the novel coronavirus approaches 100,000, according to a Reuters analysis.

Alabama had the biggest weekly increase at 28%, Missouri’s new cases rose 27% and North Carolina’s rose 26%, according to the analysis of data from The COVID Tracking Project, a volunteer-run effort to track the outbreak.

New cases in Georgia, one of the first states to reopen, rose 21% after two weeks of declines. The state attributed the increase to a backlog of test results and more testing.

Antibody tests for Covid-19 wrong up to half the time, CDC says
Antibody tests used to determine if people have been infected in the past with Covid-19 might be wrong up to half the time, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in new guidance posted on its website.

Antibody tests, often called serologic tests, look for evidence of an immune response to infection. "Antibodies in some persons can be detected within the first week of illness onset," the CDC says.
They are not accurate enough to use to make important policy decisions, the CDC said.

NATIONAL“We’re surging:” Alabama reports largest COVID-19 increases to date
Alabama saw its largest single-day increase in new COVID-19 cases Monday, according to the state, as daily case counts continue an upward trend and hospitals across the state report increasing hospitalizations.

Alabama blew past 15,000 confirmed cases of the virus on Monday, according to the Department of Public Health’s daily case count. The state had confirmed more than 3,200 new cases in the last seven days, according to APR‘s tracking.

By Tuesday evening, the total reached 15,650. The rising case counts are concerning doctors and public health experts who worry the public is not taking the virus as seriously since the state lifted restrictions.
“I’m afraid that we’re going to have to go through some pretty tough times to drive the message home that this virus is still here, and it’s not going away,” said Dr. Michael Saag, an infectious disease expert at UAB.

" Five studies, including two controlled clinical trials, have demonstrated significant major outpatient treatment efficacy. Hydroxychloroquine+azithromycin has been used as standard-of-care in more than 300,000 older adults with multicomorbidities, with estimated proportion diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmias attributable to the medications 47/100,000 users, of which estimated mortality is <20%, 9/100,000 users, compared to the 10,000 Americans now dying each week. These medications need to be widely available and promoted immediately for physicians to prescribe."

Immigrant doctors prepare for family's deportation if they die of coronavirus
Immigrant doctors practicing in the United States are bracing for their family's deportation, should the doctors die from coronavirus.

“If I get sick and if something happens to me, it’s basically over for my family,” Parth Mehta, a hospitalist in Peoria, Ill., told NBC Asian America.
He added: “It’s kind of weird that we are considered essential when it comes to saving lives, but we are considered nonessential when it comes to immigration purposes, and your family faces the risk of deportation if you die."

There are roughly 127,000 immigrant physicians serving in the United States, making up nearly a quarter of all licensed physicians in the country.

The majority of the doctors come from India, Philippines, Mexico, Pakistan and the Caribbean, according to the 2018 Federation of State Medical Boards census. However, if a physician is working on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic and something happens to them, their families run the risk of being deported.

All immigrant physicians like Mehta are authorized to work in the U.S. through H-1B visas. These visas are tied to their employment, so if something happens and they become disabled or unable to work, their families, who are in the country on H-4 dependent visas become subject to deportation.
Similarly, if the doctors were to die, their families would immediately become undocumented and subject to deportation. ...

U.S. economy shrank at 5% annual rate in the first quarter
The U.S. economy shrank at an even faster pace than initially estimated in the first three months of this year with economists continuing to expect a far worse outcome in the current April-June quarter.

The Commerce Department reported Thursday that the gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic health, fell at an annual rate of 5% in the first quarter, a bigger decline than the 4.8% drop first estimated a month ago.

It was the biggest quarterly decline since an 8.4% fall in the fourth quarter of 2008 during the depths of the financial crisis.

Trump announces U.S. withdrawal from the World Health Organization
Alarmed health experts said the move will set back global efforts to fight the pandemic.

President Donald Trump on Friday said he is terminating the U.S. relationship with the World Health Organization, making good on his April threat to withdraw from the U.N. health agency he's repeatedly blamed for mishandling the coronavirus pandemic.
"We will be today terminating our relationship with the World Health Organization and directing those funds to worldwide and deserving urgent global public health needs,” Trump said in a brief statement from the White House Rose Garden.

The move was quickly panned by health experts, who claimed it would set back global efforts to defeat a novel virus that's already killed more than 360,000 people and sickened nearly 6 million. But severing ties with WHO has been cheered by Trump's base, which is distrustful of international bodies. ...

Experts worry the U.S. exit from WHO would leave the country blind to an exchange of critical public health information.
The head of the American Medical Association, the nation’s largest physician group, urged Trump in the “strongest terms possible" to reverse the decision.
