Boris Johnson wasted seven weeks talking nonsense about coronavirus, says expert
Don’t take my word for it; this information comes from leading medical journal The Lancet.

Editor Richard Horton makes his feeling clear in this tweet:

richard horton@richardhorton1
It said it took a study from Imperial to understand the likely burden of COVID-19 on the NHS.
But read the first paper we published on COVID-19 on Jan 24. 32% admitted to ITU with 15% mortality.
We have wasted 7 weeks. This crisis was entirely preventable.

The rest of Europe views the UK's coronavirus plan with disbelief
Here in Spain, the number of deaths is rising, but I am more worried about my friends and family in Britain and the US

Yesterday, in the small Spanish country town where I go to fill up my water supply, an ambulance with flashing lights went up the deserted main street. Two municipal police cars followed it slowly, making it look already like a funeral procession. Only three other people were out, and two of them were wearing face masks.
When I first saw pictures like this from China and Iran, for some reason, I didn’t take seriously that it would also happen in Spain – my home for the past 25 years. It wasn’t just me who thought this, many politicians and experts were saying the same.

How wrong we were. Italy has overtaken China, becoming the country with the greatest number of deaths in the pandemic. Spain took third place from Iran yesterday, and will likely take only three days to move ahead of China. Little surprise, then, that the government has now extended our almost total lockdown to a full month.

Ideas of cultural or national superiority are the greatest risk factor of all at a time like this. Nowhere is that a more serious danger right now than in the United Kingdom and the United States – two countries especially prone to such delusions. ...

Coronavirus: Boris Johnson self-isolating after testing positive
Prime minister says he will continue to lead the fight against the infection via video conference calls

The prime minister, Boris Johnson, has tested positive for coronavirus and is self-isolating.
In a video message recorded shortly after he remotely chaired the regular early-morning Covid-19 “war cabinet” today, the PM said that he had been suffering from a temperature and a persistent cough and had been advised to take a test by chief medical officer Chris Whitty.

Mr Johnson said that he was working from home and would continue to “lead the national fightback against coronavirus”.

Coronavirus: Boris Johnson blames administrative error for failure to sign up to EU equipment help scheme
EU countries are banding together to buy equipment in bulk to get priority

Downing Street has blamed an administrative error for the UK’s failure to sign up to an emergency EU scheme to help procure vital medical equipment to fight coronavirus.
After an outcry about the refusal to take part in the programme, a government spokesperson claimed that “initial communication problems” meant the UK was confused about whether it could take part.
The claim from No.10 comes despite EU officials being clear in public from early on that the UK could be involved, with a spokesperson stating on 19 March that Britain was “eligible to participate” because it was in the Brexit transition period and is thus being treated like a member state.

Critics accused Boris Johnson of taking an ideological stand against participating in the EU scheme, a charge which No.10 denies.

Earlier on Thursday the prime minister’s official spokesperson appeared sanguine about the UK’s lack of participation, telling reporters when questioned: “We are no longer members of the EU. We are doing our own work on ventilators and we have had a very strong response from business. We have sourced ventilators form the private sector and international manufacturers.”

But after mounting criticism of the PM and calls to join the EU scheme, a spokesperson appeared to change the government’s story. He said the UK would consider joining future schemes.
The programme, initiated by the European Commission, uses the bulk-buying power of the 500 million person single market to get priority for ventilators and protective equipment – which doctors have warned are in short supply in the UK amid a time of extreme global demand. ...

The government regrets to announce that a chance to procure ventilators somehow ended up in Boris Johnson’s spam folder
Still, we are told that the government will consider taking part in ‘future rounds’ now that we’ve missed out on this one

... So there was some confusion over the fact that the UK had chosen not to take part in the EU’s ventilator procurement scheme, to which we had expressly and very publicly been invited, despite having left the EU what feels like several lifetimes ago.
The same old Brexit arguments apply here, which we’ll only trot through briefly. All the world wants ventilators; being part of a big bloc, as opposed to being a small country, increases your bargaining power and makes you more attractive to suppliers as you’ll be ordering in larger quantities, yada yada yada.
Surely we weren’t sitting out of the EU scheme out of sheer Brexiteer bloody-mindedness? Actually, it turns out, no, we weren’t. The reasoning provided (yes, at 4.57pm), is that the government didn’t get the emails. ...

... There’s also the small matter that the EU’s ventilator procurement scheme was announced at a public press conference, and that the UK could take part was said, on camera, on live television. ...
https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/cor...s-a9429196.html

Yes, that’s it. That’s really it. There’s a mad rush for ventilators, no number is too many, and there’s absolutely no time to lose, but an offer to join a massive ventilator procurement scheme somehow ended up in Boris Johnson’s spam folder or something like that.

Coronavirus ventilators will not be ready for months despite epidemic peak being ‘weeks away’, UK government admits
PM's spokesperson also denies that refusal to take part in EU scheme is related to Brexit

Boris Johnson’s official spokesperson told reporters on Thursday that the government had ordered 8,000 approved machines for the NHS.
“We would say we expect thousands of those to arrive in the coming weeks and thousands more in the pipeline to arrive in the coming months,” they told a Westminster briefing.

However, Professor Neil Ferguson, a key scientist advising the government in its response, has suggested the majority of those ventilators may be needed sooner than that.
If current lockdown measures have been effective in slowing the spread of the virus, Mr Ferguson predicted that intensive care demand would peak “in approximately two to three weeks and then decline thereafter”.

Fruit and veg ‘will run out’ unless Britain charters planes to fly in farm workers from eastern Europe
UK urgently needs 90,000 labourers to pick crops that will otherwise die in the fields, warns charity

Charter flights to bring in agricultural workers from eastern Europe are needed as a matter of urgency, otherwise fruit and vegetables will be left unpicked in Britain’s fields, the government is being warned.
Some large farms have already been chartering planes to bring in labour from eastern Europe. But farming organisations and recruitment agencies say that, in the face of massive disruption to the agricultural sector caused by the spread of the coronavirus, the government needs to step in and help organise more flights.

Some 90,000 positions need to be filled, many in just a few weeks’ time. One leading supplier, the charity Concordia, was looking to bring in around 10,000 labourers – half from the EU and the rest from Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia and Barbados. But all of the non-EU countries are closed. On Wednesday, in a big setback, Ukraine extended its lockdown from 2 April until 23 April.

Have you heard the story about the Scottish farmer who saved an English nobleman's son and was rewarded for it with an education for his own son, who grew up to become Dr Alexander Fleming of penicillin fame, a new medicine that saved the nobleman's son a second time when he caught pneumonia in 1944 — the inimitable Winston Churchill?

It's a myth, but we're living a version of it with the Coronavirus crisis. This week there was an article about people with medical skills from Germany's refugee intake of 2015 volunteering to help with the coronavirus crisis, because they want to give something back to the country that gave them so much.

Kindness. Paying it forward. Karma.

Boris Johnson will be judged on the next four weeks. That prospect should frighten him
The British public are being patient over the coronavirus crisis, but they will not forgive governmental confusion for ever

Boris Johnson and his government are on probation, watched by a public whose mood could turn rapidly and brutally. For now, and on paper, Johnson has the people with him: his poll ratings have surged north of 50%, a feat last managed by a Tory government at the height of the Falklands war nearly 40 years ago.
But the wisest heads in Downing Street will not be turned by those numbers. They know that there’s always a “rally around the flag” effect at moments of extreme crisis: when citizens are frightened, they want to believe their leaders have got things under control.
That’s why incumbents around the world, even useless and immoral ones such as Donald Trump, have enjoyed an initial corona bounce in their ratings, almost regardless of their actions.
At the start of the Iran hostage crisis in 1979 Jimmy Carter saw his approval numbers leap from 32% to 61% – only for him to crash to defeat a year later.
Johnson will know that one day, and perhaps quite soon, he, too, will be judged. ...

Ja, mein PARTEI Vorsitzender hat es geschafft.

Während ich seinen tweet ...

"Boris Johnson im Krankenhaus;

ZwinkerSmiley!"
