Sinn Féin stakes a claim to the New Ireland
Talk of IRA links wearies voters who want to leave the past behind

It’s a political expression every Irish person knows: Tiocfaidh ár lá. In this Twitter age, it has that essential three-word snappiness, up there with “Take back control”, “Drain the swamp” and “Get Brexit done”. But it comes from a darker era. The slogan was coined by IRA hunger-striker Bobby Sands, used by his clenched-fisted colleagues and spray-painted on gable walls in west Belfast. Last year, it was publicly invoked by Mary Lou McDonald, the new, urbane leader of Sinn Féin. This heavily loaded expression is the mantra of Irish Republicanism. It means: “Our day will come”.

It looks like that day might be here.

Barnier tells UK: don't kid yourself about financial services deal
EU chief Brexit negotiator scotches hopes of special deal for City of London

Michel Barnier has warned Sajid Javid and Boris Johnson that “they should not kid themselves” that Brussels will give a special deal to the City of London after a photograph emerged of the UK’s opening negotiating position on the new post-Brexit arrangements.

A briefing paper, snapped by a long-lens camera as it was taken into Downing St on Monday, suggested the UK would seek in the coming negotiations a “permanent equivalence” regime for financial services that would last for “decades to come”.

Speaking in the European parliament in Strasbourg, the EU’s chief negotiator scotched the chancellor’s hopes for maintaining such stable access to the European market after the end of 2020, when the UK leaves the single market and customs union.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to make it clear to certain people in the United Kingdom authority that they should not kid themselves about this. There will not be general open-ended ongoing equivalence in financial services, nor other management or financial agreements with the United Kingdom,” Barnier said. “We will keep control of these tools, and we will retain the free-hand to take our own decisions.”

Negotiations on the future relationship between the UK and the EU are due to start in the first week of March.
At the end of the transition period, the British financial services sector will no longer have the right to operate in the EU as it does today.
The City will instead rely on Brussels judging that the UK’s regulations and supervisory systems are sufficiently robust – a so-called equivalence decision that can be overturned with as little as 30 days’ notice. ...

European commission chief picks out contradictions in UK approach to post-Brexit deal

Von der Leyen noted that the “Canada-style deal” referred to by Johnson as his primary goal in the coming negotiations contained tariffs and quota limits on some goods crossing the Atlantic.
Both sides have said they want to avoid such costs and barriers to trade. Von der Leyen also pointed out that there were also stringent level playing field conditions to ensure high standards in that deal.
“And, honestly, I was a little bit surprised to hear the prime minister of the United Kingdom speak about the Australian model,” Von der Leyen said in response to Johnson’s recent claim to be willing to replicate such a trade “deal” if other arrangements proved unachievable.

“Australia without any doubt is a strong and a like-minded partner,” Von der Leyen told MEPs. “But the European Union does not have a trade agreement with Australia. We are currently trading on WTO terms. And if this is the British choice, well, we are fine with that without any question. But, in fact, we just are in the moment where we are agreeing with Australia that we must end this situation and we work in a trade deal with them.”

“Of course the United Kingdom can decide to settle for less but I personally believe we should be way more ambitious,” Von der Leyen said. ...

Sajid Javid resigns: Chancellor quits Boris Johnson's cabinet and replaced with Rishi Sunak
Chancellor dramatically walks out after a bust-up with Dominic Cummings over a demand for him to sack his advisers

Sajid Javid has dramatically quit the Cabinet, throwing Boris Johnson’s first reshuffle into chaos and controversy.
The chancellor walked out after a bust-up over Dominic Cummings' demand for him to sack his advisers to end a briefing war, it appeared.

Mr Javid’s departure comes just one month before a crucial budget, intended to chart the course for the new government – and makes him the shortest-serving chancellor for more than 50 years. ...

Geoffrey Cox: Attorney general sacked from cabinet by Boris Johnson
Departing chief law officer says removal from government was 'at the prime minister's request'

The government's chief law officer had made clear in a speech on Wednesday that he wanted to hold on to the post, and said after his dismissal that he was 'leaving the government at the prime minister's request'.
Cox, who spoke at the launch of Mr Johnson's bid for the Tory leadership last year, is understood to have fallen foul of the prime minister because of his insistence on speaking out independently in cabinet.
In a letter of resignation - which he made clear he had made at Mr Johnson's request - the outgoing attorney appeared to allude to this by referring to his efforts to deliver "candid and independent" advice to the PM and his predecessor Theresa May.

BRITISH TRAVELLERS FACE BEING TURNED AWAY AT EU AIRPORTS OVER NEW PASSPORT EXPIRY RULES AFTER BREXIT
British travellers to the European Union will face onerous red tape because of Brexit, the government has confirmed.

During the transition period for the remainder of the year, UK passports are valid for travel anywhere in the EU up to and including the date of expiry.
But tough new rules will come into effect on 1 January 2021, which mean that a traveller whose British passport has almost 15 months to run could be turned away from the airport.

HM Passport Office has issued a notice confirming: “You’ll need to have at least six months left on an adult or child passport to travel to most countries in Europe.”
Unfortunately for millions of British passport holders, the EU’s definition of “six months left” may be very different from the date in the passport.

The European Union has strict rules on passport validity for travellers visiting from outside the EU.
Passports issued by non-member countries are regarded as expired once they have been valid for 10 years.

For many years, until September 2018, the UK had the generous policy of allowing credit for “unspent” time when renewing a passport, issuing documents valid for up to 10 years and nine months.
So a passport issued on 30 June 2011 could show an expiry date of 30 March 2022. This was not a problem while the UK was in the European Union.
But now, while the expiry date printed in the passport remains valid for the UK and other non-EU countries around the world, within the European Union the issue date is critical.

That passport issued on 30 June 2011 will be regarded as expiring on 30 June 2021. Therefore if its holder attempted to board a plane to the European Union on New Year’s Day 2021, it would have insufficient validity and the airline would be obliged to turn them away.

Brexit trade talks set for acrimonious start as UK accuses EU of being too tough
UK officials accuse EU of 'cherry picking' as commission demands UK play by European rules

Angry British officials have said the EU is trying to impose conditions on the UK that go far beyond the standard of a normal free trade agreement – after the European parliament overwhelmingly backed a no-nonsense negotiating mandate on Wednesday.

The EU says that Britain’s closeness to the continent and the interlinked nature of the two economies means the UK government must commit to maintain European standards on the environment, workers’ rights, and safety – including future rules – if it wants trade access.

Brussels and member states are worried that the UK could slash standards and outcompete European businesses on an unfair basis, and say the restrictions are needed to prevent this if the UK wants to keep tariff-free access to Europe’s single market.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/po...s-a9332316.html

'Don't kid yourselves': EU instantly shoots down UK government plea to protect City access after Brexit
Dismissal comes hours after Chancellor asked for a 'durable' system, in blow to Boris Johnson

The EU's chief negotiator has immediately rejected a plea by Sajid Javid to protect the City's access to EU financial markets after Brexit.

The Chancellor had called for a “reliable equivalence process” for financial services rules on which “a durable relationship” can be built with the EU.
But just hours after the proposal was published Brussels' chief negotiator Michel Barnier dealt a blow to Boris Johnson's negotiating strategy.
"I would like to take this opportunity to make it clear to certain people in the United Kingdom bearing authority that they should not kid themselves about this - there will not be general, open-ended, ongoing equivalence in financial services," he said.
Mr Barnier added that the EU would "retain a free hand to take our own decisions" and would simply not negotiate with the UK on this point.

The Chancellor had said the Government wanted to conclude a full range of equivalence assessments by June 2020 - allowing the UK and EU to respect each other's rules.
But he also said the UK would keep the freedom to diverge and regulate in a different way from the rules set in Brussels.
"Each side will only grant equivalence if it believes the other's regulations are compatible," he wrote in the City AM newspaper.
"But compatible does not mean identical, and both the UK and the EU have at different times recognised the importance of focusing on regulatory outcomes....

"We will no longer be rule-takers, but we remain committed to the highest international standards of financial regulation and to shaping global rule-making."
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/po...d-a9329026.html

Gone. And out of the picture.

"I would like to take this opportunity to make it clear to certain people in the United Kingdom bearing authority that they should not kid themselves."
Michel Barnier
