Bildung = Das Wissen darüber, wo man nachschauen kann... :)

Geht in etwa so:

“The Accidental Universe”: Physics overthrows itself
A scientist-novelist explains the revolutionary philosophical implications of new theories of the universe
LAURA MILLER

...If the multiverse concept is true — and, as Lightman points out, it’s hard to believe we’ll ever be able to conclusively test it — then, he writes, “the philosophical ethos of science is torn from its roots.” That ethos rests on the conviction that science is moving us toward a more and more complete understanding of the laws of nature and that “these basic principles are so restrictive that only one self-consistent universe is possible, like a crossword puzzle with only one solution.” Or, as the Nobel-winning physicist Steven Weinberg put it, “We now find ourselves at a historic fork in the road we travel to understand the laws of nature. If the multiverse idea is correct, the style of fundamental physics will be radically changed.” ...

...The multiverse also offers a refutation of the concept of Intelligent Design. Like Intelligent Design, the multiverse is an idea that accounts for the fact that the universe we inhabit is finely tuned in various ways that permit the existence of life. If certain factors (such as the amount of dark energy in the universe) were a little bit greater or lesser — poof! But if there are an infinite, or nearly infinite, number of universes, some of which are nothing but a cold fog of evenly dispersed particles and others a single, tiny, infinitely dense point, then ours is merely one of a few universes configured so as to allow life. There’s nothing particulary remarkable about our existence in it, because if it were otherwise, we wouldn’t be around to remark on it. Thus, ours is an accidental universe, rather than the inexorable and inevitable result of set laws that can be discovered and understood by humanity. ...

...Especially welcome is Lightman’s repudiation of the strident, even mocking certainty espoused by some self-appointed crusaders for the scientific worldview against what they view as the plague of religion. “I am an atheist myself,” he writes. “I completely endorse the central doctrine of science. And I do not believe in the existence of a Being who lives beyond matter and energy, even if that Being refrains from entering the fray of the physical world,” as does the deity of deism and what Lightman calls immanentism, the sort of God envisioned by both Spinoza and Einstein. But “I believe there are things we take on faith, without physical proof and even sometimes without any methodology for proof. We cannot clearly show why the ending of a particular novel haunts us … We cannot prove the meaning of our life, or whether life has any meaning at all.” Some evolutionary psychologists seem to be doing their darnedest to prove Lightman wrong in that, but even their theories require a certain amount of belief in what can’t, ultimately, be proven. ...
http://www.salon.com/2014/01/12/the_acci...rthrows_itself/

" At Virginia Tech, on Wednesday evening March 21, there was a debate on the question "Does God Probably Exist?"
One argument given was the "fine-tuning argument". One of the debaters was studying high-level academic philosophy, and they stated it thus:
Given the fine-tuning evidence, a life-permitting Universe (LPM) is very, very epistemically unlikely under the non-existence of a fine-tuner, and is not unlikely if a fine-tuner exists.

The skeptical side had replies to this, but they didn't give my favorite. We only observe one Universe. For Universes, we have a sample size of one. You cannot tell anything about probability, "likelihood", with a sample size of one. The only grounds we have for judging what is "likely" or "unlikely" in nature is what we observe IN nature. For events IN the Universe, we can judge that common events are "likely", and uncommon events are "unlikely". To say that the Universe itself is "very, very unlikely" is a category mistake; it is attempting to apply a concept- (probability)- where it simply does not apply. With a sample size of one, all we can say is that the Universe is "likely enough" to have happened once. I.E., the Universe is "likely enough" to be possible.

It is actually not unlikely, not at all surprising, that the Universe we observe is one that allows us to exist as living beings to observe it. Given that we do exist and observe it from inside it, it must be one that allows our existence, with "probability one". It would be miraculous, something in serious need of supernatural explanation, if the Universe we observed was NOT one that allowed our existence.

The fact that we can IMAGINE other Universes, even imagine them in full mathematical detail, is not EVIDENCE that these imagined alternate Universes actually exist. It is not even evidence that these imagined alternate Universes are possible. Our mathematical imagination does not give us a larger sample size, it does not let us legitimately estimate "probability" for the Universe as a whole."

New Physics Complications Lend Support to Multiverse Hypothesis
Decades of confounding experiments have physicists considering a startling possibility: The universe might not make sense
By Natalie Wolchover and Quanta Magazine

On an overcast afternoon in late April, physics professors and students crowded into a wood-paneled lecture hall at Columbia University for a talk by Nima Arkani-Hamed, a high-profile theorist visiting from the Institute for Advanced Study in nearby Princeton, N.J. With his dark, shoulder-length hair shoved behind his ears, Arkani-Hamed laid out the dual, seemingly contradictory implications of recent experimental results at the Large Hadron Collider in Europe.

“The universe is inevitable,” he declared. “The universe is impossible.”

The spectacular discovery of the Higgs boson in July 2012 confirmed a nearly 50-year-old theory of how elementary particles acquire mass, which enables them to form big structures such as galaxies and humans. “The fact that it was seen more or less where we expected to find it is a triumph for experiment, it’s a triumph for theory, and it’s an indication that physics works,” Arkani-Hamed told the crowd.

However, in order for the Higgs boson to make sense with the mass (or equivalent energy) it was determined to have, the LHC needed to find a swarm of other particles, too. None turned up.

With the discovery of only one particle, the LHC experiments deepened a profound problem in physics that had been brewing for decades. Modern equations seem to capture reality with breathtaking accuracy, correctly predicting the values of many constants of nature and the existence of particles like the Higgs. Yet a few constants — including the mass of the Higgs boson — are exponentially different from what these trusted laws indicate they should be, in ways that would rule out any chance of life, unless the universe is shaped by inexplicable fine-tunings and cancellations.

In peril is the notion of “naturalness,” Albert Einstein’s dream that the laws of nature are sublimely beautiful, inevitable and self-contained. Without it, physicists face the harsh prospect that those laws are just an arbitrary, messy outcome of random fluctuations in the fabric of space and time.

The LHC will resume smashing protons in 2015 in a last-ditch search for answers. But in papers, talks and interviews, Arkani-Hamed and many other top physicists are already confronting the possibility that the universe might be unnatural. (There is wide disagreement, however, about what it would take to prove it.)

“Ten or 20 years ago, I was a firm believer in naturalness,” said Nathan Seiberg, a theoretical physicist at the Institute, where Einstein taught from 1933 until his death in 1955. “Now I’m not so sure. My hope is there’s still something we haven’t thought about, some other mechanism that would explain all these things. But I don’t see what it could be.”

Physicists reason that if the universe is unnatural, with extremely unlikely fundamental constants that make life possible, then an enormous number of universes must exist for our improbable case to have been realized. Otherwise, why should we be so lucky? Unnaturalness would give a huge lift to the multiverse hypothesis, which holds that our universe is one bubble in an infinite and inaccessible foam. According to a popular but polarizing framework called string theory, the number of possible types of universes that can bubble up in a multiverse is around 10^500. In a few of them, chance cancellations would produce the strange constants we observe.....
